Urdu Language & Literature in Turkey: Potential & Prospect

LUMS

Dr. Asuman Belen Özcan is a professor of Urdu language and literature at Ankara University, Turkey. She completed her undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies in Urdu language and literature at Ankara University before joining the University of Punjab for advanced studies. Her stay in Lahore not only gave her the opportunity of working and interacting with renowned authors, poets and critics but also shaped deep and everlasting bonds with Pakistan. She returned to Ankara University as faculty of language, history and geography and has been serving as the head of the Urdu language & literature department since 2014, teaching the language and Pakistan’s cultural history. Her efforts, in collaboration with the Government College University Lahore, have resulted in three international conferences on Urdu literature at Ankara University in recent years. Her book Urdu Nesri (Urdu prose), the only publication on Urdu literature in Turkish language, is used as a textbook by several Urdu departments in Turkey including Ankara, Istanbul and Konya Selcuk universities.

The Gurmani Center for Languages & Literature is delighted to have the opportunity of hosting Dr. Özcan’s talk on campus. Please join Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar to learn about her involvement in not only teaching, researching and promoting Urdu language and literature to Turkish students but also her understanding of the Pakistani culture and its reception in Turkey.
